BRIEF

We were asked to think in a more "metaphorical“ manner regarding the idea of the "urban island“ and to re-interpret the idea of the “villa” and the “lido” and design a new type of “Villa Lido” in Brown Hart Gardens. By doing so, “connections to views, context appropriation, programmatic enhancement and prioritizing, materiality and tectonics, public vs private use, and precedent comparison” were analysed as part of the process.

The site is “detached from the adjacent city fabric of Mayfair and it operates as an elevated garden – with the original substation layout still operational underneath it”. Brown Hart Gardens is located off Duke Street, Mayfair, and is currently a 929 m2 public garden on top of an electricity substation.
